Ghanaian football legend and cult-hero of Olympique Lyon, Michael Essien, extended a warm welcome to the young talent Ernest Nuamah, who has successfully joined the French giants.
In response to the official introduction of Ernest Nuamah as an Olympique Lyon player on August 30, 2023, Michael Essien utilized his social media platform to convey his best wishes and good luck to Nuamah as he embarks on his journey with the new club.
Essien tweeted “Finally he is from Lyon, Come on @Nana_Nuamah10. Good luck, my little one”.
The completion of the transfer has brought immense joy to Michael Essien, stemming from two significant factors. Firstly, he holds a special place in the hearts of Olympique Lyon fans due to the remarkable years he spent at the club, leaving a lasting legacy. Secondly, Essien currently serves as a development coach at Nordsjaelland.
During his time at Nordsjaelland, Essien had the privilege of witnessing Ernest Nuamah’s exceptional talent firsthand. It’s believed that Essien played a pivotal role in Nuamah’s decision to choose Lyon over several other clubs vying for his signature.
Having been a part of Olympique Lyon’s roster for two years, Essien established himself as a dominant midfielder in the competitive French League.
His success in France paved the way for a transformative move to Chelsea in 2005, where he achieved worldwide recognition and world-class status.
Ernest Nuamah’s addition to Lyon comes through an initial season-long loan deal, accompanied by a subsequent obligation to purchase for a total deal worth €30 million, comprising a €25 million fixed fee and €5 million in add-ons. Nuamah has already inked a four-year contract with Lyon, valid from July 1, 2024.
Nuamah joins the ranks of Abedi Pele, Michael Essien, and John Mensah as the fourth Ghanaian player to join Lyon. Furthermore, he is anticipated to secure a spot in Chris Hughton’s Ghana squad for the AFCON 2023 Qualifier against the Central African Republic.
