Conor Gallagher’s recent goal-scoring form has been likened to London buses, with three goals in two games for Chelsea.
His first goal came in a 3-1 FA Cup win against Aston Villa, followed by a brace in a Premier League victory over Crystal Palace. The addition of goals to his game is seen as making him an even more important figure at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino is known to be an admirer of Gallagher, and his recent performances have raised questions about whether he could thrive as one of Chelsea’s main attackers.
After the Palace win, he said: “I think he’s a player with a great commitment to the team, always trying to compensate for every single situation.
“It’s priceless to have a player like him. I’m so happy for him.”
Asked about rumours of Gallagher’s potential exit, the Argentine added: “What he said to me was that he wanted to stay at Chelsea.
“But it’s about him and the club. I am not [worried about] these types of things — he has another year on his contract.
“But that’s a matter for him and the club.”
Keeping hold of Conor Gallagher could be crucial for Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino as he looks to establish his influence on a team still undergoing a transition phase.
Gallagher’s role in the team has slightly shifted, allowing him to operate further forward with players like Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo providing cover behind him. This adjustment has given Gallagher the freedom to showcase his goal-scoring ability, which had been somewhat subdued earlier in the season.
Even before his recent goal-scoring exploits, Gallagher’s impact was evident. He leads the Premier League in possessions won in the attacking third and ranks first at Chelsea for passes into the final third and tackles. His impressive pass completion rate further highlights his midfield prowess.
Gallagher’s strengths, both on and off the ball, have made him a valuable asset for Pochettino’s squad. Despite speculation about his future, Gallagher remains focused on succeeding with Chelsea and setting an example in a talented but youthful team.
After his brace against former club Palace, he said: “I really enjoyed scoring the two goals.
“I’ve not scored enough this season so to get two is a big confidence boost for me in front of goal.
“That it was against Palace, well that’s kind of typical now, to be honest.”
With confidence high and self-belief growing, Gallagher will hope he can have a similar impact as Chelsea make the daunting trip to the Etihad.
