David Beckham is optimistic about England’s chances in Euro 2024, believing that their talented squad could put an end to their international tournament struggles.
The former England captain expressed his hope during his attendance at the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup semi-final between New Zealand and India in Mumbai, where he served in his role as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.
At 48 years old, Beckham highlighted the quality of the Three Lions’ squad, emphasising the contribution of both young talents like Jude Bellingham and seasoned veterans like Harry Kane.
Despite England’s strong performances in recent international tournaments, they haven’t clinched a victory since the 1966 World Cup.
They reached the World Cup semi-finals in 2018 and suffered a heart-wrenching loss to Italy in the Euro 2020 final at Wembley.
With a secured spot at the Euro 2024 championships, Beckham remains hopeful for England’s success.
“I really believe in this England team,” Beckham told AFP. “I believe in Gareth Southgate and what he’s doing and what he’s done for a number of years now. We were unfortunate to lose in the Euros final against Italy, but we were so close.
“And I’ve seen that when our national team has some kind of success, the way our country comes together is incredible.”
“I don’t want to speak too soon, but with the 2024 Euros, I think that we have a real opportunity with young players like Cole Palmer, Jude Bellingham, and the other players that we have in the team.
“And of course, you know, we have a captain like Harry Kane who still continues to inspire his team and still continues to score goals. So I think we have a real opportunity.”
On Friday, England will host Malta before embarking on a trip to North Macedonia three days later. Despite having already secured qualification, their aim is to finish strongly, ensuring they attain top seeding in next month’s group-stage draw.
