Cristiano Ronaldo (CR 7) has been handed a one-match suspension by the Disciplinary and Ethics Committee of the Saudi Football Federation (SAFF) for an alleged obscene gesture following Al Nassr’s 3-2 victory over Al Shabab.
The incident occurred after the final whistle, where Ronaldo was seen cupping his ear and making repeated hand motions in front of his pelvic area, seemingly directed towards rival Al Shabab supporters.
Chants of “Messi” could be heard in the background, alluding to Ronaldo’s long-time football rival from Argentina.
As per the committee’s decision, Ronaldo must pay a fine of 10,000 Saudi riyals ($2,666) to the Saudi Football Federation and an additional 20,000 riyals to Al Shabab to cover the costs of the complaint filing fees.
Notably, the committee emphasised that the ruling is not subject to appeal.
This isn’t the first time Ronaldo has been involved in such a controversy. In April 2023, the 39-year-old was seen appearing to grab his genitals after a league game against Al Hilal, which Al Nassr lost 2-0.
Ronaldo, who joined Al Nassr in December 2022, has been a standout performer, leading the league with 22 goals. In the recent match against Al Shabab, he scored the opener from a first-half penalty.
Al Nassr’s upcoming match is on Thursday, and Ronaldo’s absence will surely be felt as they pursue further success in the league.
Al Nassr currently lags behind fellow league leader Al Hilal by four points, despite having played one more game.
Additionally, the team finds itself in the quarterfinals of the Asian Champions League, a tournament that Al Nassr has yet to secure victory in.
