Ghana coach Otto Addo addressed the goalkeeper situation within the Black Stars, particularly focusing on Jojo Wollacott’s endeavor to reclaim the starting position.
Addo acknowledged the obstacles facing Wollacott, citing his lack of regular playing time at club level as a significant factor.
Despite Wollacott’s prior status as the first-choice goalkeeper before a finger injury sidelined him for the 2022 World Cup, his path to reclaiming the position has been hindered by challenges, including injuries and limited game time at Scottish club Hibernian.
Addo also praised the performances of Lawrence Ati-Zigi and newcomer Frederick Asare, highlighting their contributions amid the ongoing competition for the goalkeeper spot in the team.
“I left it open,” Addo remarked regarding the selection of the starting goalkeeper for the Uganda match.
“I have to say that Ati-Zigi had a good match. I gave him the start because he is a regular player at his club. Frederick is new and young. I think he made a good first impression.”
Regarding Wollacott’s situation, Addo explained, “Joseph Wollacott at the moment is not playing in his club so it’s difficult to say that he will be the number one at the moment.”
However, Addo indicated that Wollacott would be allowed to showcase his abilities in the upcoming match against Uganda.
“We will decide in June who will be the goalkeeper who will stand in the goal,” Addo concluded.
