The Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Dr. Freda Prempeh, has appealed to Zoomlion Ghana Limited to contribute waste bins to support the national clean-up initiative, emphasizing that these bins would significantly enhance efforts to combat indiscriminate littering in major cities.

During her inspection of the ongoing National Clean-up Exercise, a collaboration between Municipal and District Assemblies and Zoomlion Ghana Ltd., in parts of Accra, the Minister made this request.

“I am extending a hand to Zoomlion to support this exercise with waste bins to make the exercise more effective,” she said.

Dr. Freda Prempeh highlighted the importance of waste bins in facilitating waste segregation and recycling, aligning with the ministry’s long-term objectives. She also stressed the need for education, especially for children, on waste segregation to instill responsible habits from an early age.

While commending youth involved in plastic waste segregation, she expressed concern about the lack of safety precautions among them, including the absence of masks, gloves, and handwashing facilities.

Dr. Freda Prempeh emphasized that waste segregation at the source, such as households, would prevent such activities by children.

In response to the Minister’s call, Zoomlion’s Public Relations and Corporate Affairs Manager, Mr. Ernest Morgan Acquah, pledged the company’s commitment to addressing the country’s sanitation challenges, highlighting the importance of waste segregation at the source.

Mr. Acquah emphasized that maintaining a clean environment is a shared responsibility among the government, service providers, and citizens, urging everyone to actively participate in the monthly national clean-up exercise.

The nationwide clean-up event coincided with International Clean Up Day and adopted the theme “Cleaning for Safe, Healthy, and Sustainable Ghana.” The Minister emphasized the need for effective collaboration among stakeholders to achieve the government’s vision of a clean Ghana and sustainable WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) service delivery. Plans include media sensitization campaigns and extensive premises inspections by District Assembly staff as part of the clean-up effort.
