Russia sanctioned by Canada for allegedly supplying North Korea with weaponry to Ukraine

Canada has once again punished Russians and companies that it says are helping Moscow invade Ukraine.

The penalties are for two men and six shipping companies that Canada says helped move weapons, like ballistic missiles, from North Korea to Russia illegally.

Global Affairs Canada says that these groups bought weapons from North Korea and used them in Ukraine this year and last year, which goes against international sanctions.

Ottawa says the companies are connected to the Russian military and help move weapons. They can’t do business with Canadians.

Canada has punished over 3,000 people and groups in Eastern Europe who are involved with Russia invading Ukraine in 2014 and invading again in 2022.

A report from the Senate says it’s hard to know if Canada’s restrictions on people are being followed, and if Ottawa has clearly explained why they are imposing the restrictions.

The police updated their information on money that’s been frozen and transactions that have been blocked because of sanctions. There wasn’t much change since last September.

Sanctions against Russians in Canada have stopped $140 million of their money, increased from $136 million last year.

Canada stopped $317 million transactions, which is more than the previous $305 million.

New information shows that $116,000 belonging to people from Belarus has been stopped from being used. Last September, no money had been frozen.
