Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Professor Ransford Gyampo has characterized the prosecution of Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson in the ongoing ambulance case as a vicious scheme.
Prof. Gyampo warned that such actions by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) “should be worrying to all well-meaning Ghanaians who cherish our cohesion and peace.”
Richard Jakpa, the third accused in the ambulance case, claimed in his witness statement that Attorney General Godfred Dame once confided in him that he was under pressure from President Akufo-Addo and former Minister of Finance Ken Ofori-Atta to prosecute Ato Forson.
In a Facebook post, Prof. Gyampo stated that if Jakpa’s allegations are proven true, the NPP would be the “worst offenders in decimating public confidence in our court and judicial processes.”
He elaborated, “The vicious scheme to jail Ato Forson at all costs by the NPP, as revealed by Richard Jakpa’s recent court application, should alarm all well-meaning Ghanaians who value our cohesion and peace. According to Jakpa’s testimony, the Attorney-General admitted that his involvement in the prosecution was to obscure the real motives behind the trial, driven by pressure from the President and Ken Ofori-Atta. Jakpa is requesting the court to allow him to testify and be cross-examined on these issues.
“If someone genuinely deserves punishment, so be it. But if Jakpa can substantiate his claims with evidence, the NPP would indeed be the worst offenders in eroding public confidence in our judicial system.”
Prof. Gyampo expressed his disappointment, noting, “It is disheartening that such actions are occurring under a regime we expected to know better.”
