Practical challenges may arise in implementation of emission levy – Sammy Awuku

Former National Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Samuel Awuku, has revealed that the government is revisiting the proposed annual levy for carbon emissions from petrol and diesel-powered vehicles.

Awuku acknowledged the importance of promoting eco-friendly technology but highlighted potential challenges in implementing the tax.

Speaking on Adom TV’s morning show, Badwam, he pointed out the lack of charging ports across the country as a significant hurdle, making electric cars impractical.

“Government is reconsidering the emissions tax. While the idea is commendable, practical challenges may arise in implementation. Imported cars often emit emissions, and the absence of charging ports for electric vehicles poses a challenge,” he explained.

Awuku emphasized that driving long distances in an electric car within Ghana is currently unfeasible due to the lack of charging infrastructure. Additionally, he noted that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP flagbearer, plans to alleviate tax burdens if elected president.

“Dr. Bawumia will alleviate most taxes. Yesterday, he outlined his vision, and now we are developing a comprehensive manifesto with relevant stakeholders,” he added.
