Paralympic sports get govt support, recognition after 2023 African Games

President Akufo-Addo has expressed his unwavering commitment to the development of para-sports in the African sub-region.

During a meeting at the Jubilee House, the President welcomed Samson Deen, the President of the African Paralympic Committee and Ghana Paralympic Committee, along with his team.

They were there to present medals earned by Ghanaian athletes at the recently concluded Accra 2023 African Para Games.

Representing the President, Chief of Staff Frema Opare affirmed the government’s dedication to supporting the growth of Para-Sport not only in Ghana but across Africa.

She emphasized the importance of open collaboration with the African Paralympic Committee and its affiliated organizations for the development of Para-Sport in the region.

“I want to use this opportunity to congratulate the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the LOC of Accra 2023 African Para Games for making it possible for Ghana to host this historic sports festival, the first of its kind in Africa.”

The team led by Deen, presented their trophy to the presidency at the Jubilee House in Accra on Wednesday after the Black Challenge beat Morocco 2-1 in the finals of the first-ever African Para games.

Following their impressive victory in the finals of the inaugural African Para Games, the team led by Samson Deen presented their trophy to the Jubilee House in Accra. The Black Challenge secured a 2-1 win against Morocco, claiming the championship.

In recognition of their exceptional performance, President Nana Akufo-Addo honored the national amputee football team with an undisclosed monetary award. He also directed the Minister of Sports to ensure prompt payment of all bonuses owed to the gold medal-winning team.

Additionally, the President assigned the Sports Minister the task of making comprehensive preparations for Team Ghana’s participation in the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris and the upcoming Cup of African Nations for Amputees in Cairo, Egypt, scheduled for April 19-28, 2024.

The Ghana Amputee Football team achieved their championship title by overcoming Morocco 2-1 in the final of the 2023 African Paralympic Games football tournament held at MacDan Park in Accra on September 10, 2023.
