Occupy Julorbi House Demo: Police-organisers meeting on venue ends in a stalemate

Ghana Police Service and Democracy Hub, the organisers of the ‘Occupy Julorbi House Demo’, were unable to come to a consensus on the venue for the upcoming protest.

In a statement released on Friday, September 20, 2024, the police indicated that during a meeting earlier that day, they had requested Democracy Hub to suggest different locations for the demonstration.

However, the organisers declined the alternative venues proposed to them.

“Police, therefore requested them to propose alternative locations for the demonstration, and the organisers proposed the following:37 roundabout, Airport roundabout, Opeibea intersection, Stanbic Heights, Christ the King and the Arko Adjei interchange.

“In the assessment of the Police, holding the demonstration in any of these locations may endanger public defence, public order, public safety, public health and the running of essential services,” it noted.

“Police, therefore, suggested the following seven locations to them for consideration; the Cantonments Post Office DVLA stretch, the VAG Association junction, MTN Head Office on the Liberation Road, El-wak Side park, Obra spot, Kawukudi Park, Efua Sutherland Park, the frontage of the Trade Fair,” it stated.

It further disclosed that it had gathered intelligence that some protestors are planning to jeopardise the peace, security, and law and order in the country.

“We would like to call on the organisers of the protest to caution their members against these unlawful acts, desist from any attempts to disturb the peace and abide by the Public Order Act 1994, (Act 491) and all other laws in the country since they will be held responsible for any breaches of the law,” it stated.

On Wednesday, September 18, 2024, tensions rose between the police and Democracy Hub after the police obtained an injunction from the Accra High Court to stop the group from staging their protest at Revolution Square, situated in front of the Jubilee House.

The demonstration was originally planned for September 21 to September 23, 2024.
