Meet the Bediako family, owners of pharmaceutical giants Ernest Chemists, Bedita Pharmaceutical, and others

From the lineage of a former pharmaceutical tycoon, late Ebenezer Sampong Bediako, has emerged the towering figures and renowned brands that have dominated Ghana’s pharmaceutical landscape for decades.

The family of the late businessman, including his children, nephews, nieces, and grandchildren, boasts ownership of various pharmaceutical enterprises nationwide.

Among these are prominent names such as Ernest Chemists, Bedita Pharmaceuticals, and Jebina Pharmacy Ltd, among others.

This lineage’s extensive influence was highlighted in a photograph featured in the obituary of Ebenezer Sampong Bediako, who passed away on December 26, 2020.

Born in 1935, the astute businessman served as the Chief Executive Officer of Bediako Brothers Pharmacy. Throughout his life, he fathered 47 children with six wives.

In Ghana, the pharmaceutical industry holds significant importance, providing crucial services to individuals and institutions in the hospitality and healthcare sectors, spanning both urban and rural areas. Furthermore, the sector plays a vital role in bolstering the domestic economy and fostering export opportunities.

According to Statista, the pharmaceutical industry is projected to generate revenue of US$236 million in 2024. Its ecosystem comprises drug producers, wholesalers, distributors, retailers, and consumers.
