Police in Gateshead arrested a man for investigating crimes like genocide and other serious crimes that happened in Rwanda 30 years ago.
The 69-year-old person was asked about the 1994 genocide, when 800,000 people were killed.
Experts from the Counter Terrorism Policing War Crimes Team helped Counter Terrorism Policing North East to make an arrest last Thursday.
Police said the man was let go on bail while they keep investigating.
The War Crimes team is a part of the Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command.
Commander Dominic Murphy said they are looking into very serious crimes, and anyone who did them should be punished, no matter where they are.
He said, “Getting proof to support a possible future trial is a difficult process that needs careful and accurate work. ”
“Even though someone has been arrested, the police will keep working on this investigation to make more progress. ‘
The investigation is not related to the war crime inquiries that started in 2018 and involved five people in the UK.
From April to June 1994, about 800,000 people in Rwanda were killed in just 100 days.
