Manchester City’s promising talent, Claudio Echeverri, is set to undergo a medical evaluation after reporting intense chest pains while on international duty with Argentina.
Echeverri, part of the Argentina squad, actively contributed to a 5-0 victory over Chile in an Olympic Games qualifier for the Under-23 side.
Following the match, the 18-year-old, who has committed to joining Manchester City from River Plate, disclosed experiencing chest pains during the game.
He affirmed his intention to consult with the medical team to address and assess the issue.
He told TyC Sports: “I had a very strong pain in my chest; I couldn’t breathe well and I was very scared. Just in case, I’m going to talk to the doctors to see what it is because something like this had never happened to me and I felt very scared.”
Echeverri received on-field treatment for several minutes during the first half of the match and was subsequently taken off on a stretcher.
Despite briefly returning, he was eventually substituted in the 64th minute. Argentina’s victory secures their qualification for the second round with a match to spare as they pursue a spot in the 2024 Paris Games.
The situation has sparked genuine concerns for Echeverri and Argentina, with the young player set to undergo an assessment before obtaining clearance to resume action.
Scheduled to spend the remainder of the year with River Plate, Echeverri is poised to join Premier League champions Manchester City in January 2025.
