On Saturday night, supporters of Mahama Tia Kabiru and Hajia Lariba Zuweira Abudu clashed outside Eagle FM, a local radio station in Walewale.
The atmosphere had been tense for some time, exacerbated by sharp divisions among the constituency executives, with many openly backing their preferred candidate.
This division contributed to the heightened conflict.
A physical altercation broke out between the opposing groups, prompting a rapid response from the police. The situation nearly escalated further.
“Don’t let us fire,” one frustrated officer was heard saying to an agitated supporter.
The news team on-site was quickly advised to leave for their safety.
“Please move into our car; we need to get you out of here,” a police officer urged. Another supporter warned the journalists, “Bro, you cannot report from here; it’s not safe. Please leave!”
A police reinforcement unit eventually managed to calm the situation.
With over 800 delegates scheduled to vote on Monday, this follows a recent decision by the Tamale High Court to annul the primary held in January and order a rerun.
The NPP Walewale parliamentary election date has been rescheduled to Monday, 9 September 2024, instead of the initial date of 8 September 2024.
