Currently happening is the public funeral Mass for Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI.
The body of Benedict XVI will now be returned to St. Peter’s Basilica at a later time for a private funeral. It will first be positioned in a miniature coffin constructed of zinc and wood.
After that, Benedict will be buried at the Vatican Grottoes, a huge underground cemetery or crypt beneath the basilica that contains the resting places of former popes.
When Pope John Paul II was beatified in 2011, his body was relocated from its original resting site, and his bones will now be interred there.
