The United States Embassy in Ghana has issued a cautionary statement, expressing concerns over the potential negative impacts on Ghana’s international reputation and economy following the passage of the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, commonly referred to as the anti-LGBTQ+ Bill, on February 28.
In an unexpected twist, popular musician and host of 3FM Urban Blend, Ahmed Abubakar, widely known as Blakk Rasta, has voiced his support for the controversial bill, declaring it a “blessing in disguise” for Ghana.
According to him, the legislation will compel the nation to become truly independent and responsible by severing ties with foreign donors.
“You cannot dislike gays and love gay-money. The passage of the LGBTQ+ Bill will force our greedy leaders to be truly independent and responsible,” Blakk Rasta asserted during the Black Pot segment of his radio show on March 1.
Encouraging Ghanaians to address societal issues comprehensively, he emphasised the need to combat all forms of immorality rather than focusing solely on sexual matters.
Drawing a parallel between Ghana and the biblical cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, Blakk Rasta warned of potential consequences if societal evils were left unchecked.
The artist shared that his song “Sodom & Gomorah,” the opening track of his recent twenty-track album, Salaga Soljah, was inspired by the biblical narrative.
He debunked the misconception that the destruction of the cities was solely due to homosexuality, emphasizing that other grave crimes such as murder, violence, injustice, rape, and corruption played a role.
Blakk Rasta, who had the opportunity to visit the historic site during a trip to Israel, reflected on the severity of the sins and the subsequent divine punishment.
He expressed hope that his music and radio work, particularly the patriotic hit song “My Dear Ghana,” would contribute to raising awareness and fostering positive change within Ghanaian society.
As the debate surrounding the anti-LGBTQ+ Bill continues to unfold, Blakk Rasta’s unexpected stance adds a unique perspective to the discourse on Ghana’s international relations and the pursuit of national autonomy.
