Special parliamentary committee, headed by Samuel Atta Akyea, the MP for Abuakwa South, has submitted its report to Parliament on the investigation of a leaked audio tape allegedly conspiring to remove Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.
This committee, formed by Speaker Alban Bagbin, was established in response to widespread national concern following the leak.
The report, which includes the committee’s examination of the audio conversations and any subsequent recommendations, was presented to Parliament, representing a significant development in this prominent inquiry.
The leaked audio involved senior police officers and Daniel Bugri Naabu, the former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), discussing plans to remove the IGP.
The committee’s report was officially laid before Parliament on Tuesday, June 18, with the Clerk of Parliament stating, “The report of the Special Committee of Inquiry into the contents of a leaked audio tape of a high-ranking police officer and others in an alleged conspiracy to remove the current Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, and related matters has been duly presented.”
The submission of the report is anticipated to shed light on the incident and inform Parliament’s actions regarding the findings.
The committee’s terms of reference included verifying the authenticity of the leaked audio recording, investigating the alleged conspiracy to remove the current IGP, examining other matters mentioned in the recording, recommending sanctions for those found responsible, suggesting necessary reforms, and making any other relevant recommendations and orders deemed appropriate by the committee.
