KODA’s death ‘forces’ celebrities to open about fight against G6PD deficiency

Following the passing of gospel musician KODA, several other celebrities have stepped forward to share their experiences battling G6PD Deficiency, shedding light on the difficulties faced by those living with the condition.

Among them are presenter and entrepreneur Cynthia Tima Yeboah, also known as Tima Kumkum, and Karen Kash Kane, who have opened up about their personal encounters with the disorder.

Before his demise, KODA disclosed receiving incorrect medication for eight months because doctors failed to identify his G6PD Deficiency, resulting in a deterioration of his health.

G6PD deficiency is characterized by the body’s lack of or insufficient production of an enzyme called G6PD (glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase), crucial for the proper functioning of red blood cells.

Karen shared that she discovered her G6PD Deficiency during a comprehensive lab test while pregnant with her son six years ago, subsequently confirming that she had passed the condition on to her child.

She emphasized the precautions she takes to manage the condition, including avoiding malaria drugs and products containing sulfur, like naphthalene balls.

Tima Kumkum also discussed her struggles with G6PD Deficiency, highlighting its severity and how it nearly cost her life. This experience inspired her to establish a foundation aimed at raising awareness about the condition.

Both individuals are dedicated to increasing advocacy efforts for G6PD Deficiency in hopes of saving more lives.
