Three suspects have been arrested for allegedly stealing a baby and deceiving the mother into believing the child had died in Kasoa, Central Region.
The suspects, identified as Magdalene Nana Adwoa Boafo (28), Faustina Binney (32), and Eunice Koomson (36), a teacher at Ebenezer High Academy, are currently in police custody and assisting with investigations.
The case came to light when Nana Adwoa Boafo, the prime suspect, approached the mother of the baby, Abigail Addison, during her eighth month of pregnancy. Abigail, who sells sachet water in traffic at Ofaakor, was offered financial assistance by Nana Adwoa. Subsequently, Nana Adwoa introduced Abigail to the other two suspects, who pretended to offer genuine support.
To cover their intentions, the suspects relocated Abigail from her home at Ofaakor-Jei River to an apartment in Lamptey, a suburb of Adam Nana, Kasoa, and continued to support her until she gave birth at the Kasoa Polyclinic on July 10, 2024.
The situation took a dark turn after Abigail and her healthy baby were discharged from the clinic. The suspects introduced another woman to Abigail, claiming she was a medical staffer from Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and that the baby needed treatment for infections. Abigail fell for the ruse and allowed them to take her baby.
Two days later, the suspects returned to Abigail, claiming that her baby had died at Korle-Bu and had already been buried. Their suspicious behavior prompted the landlord to report the matter to the police.
The Kasoa Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU), led by DSP Doris Laryea, conducted thorough investigations, leading to the arrest of Nana Adwoa. Initially, she insisted the baby was dead but later admitted the child was alive and with her sister in Madina. She then changed her statement, indicating the baby was with Eunice in Alico City, Ofaakor.
Eunice, upon arrest, directed the police to Faustina Binney, who was found with the baby in Ablekuma. All three suspects have been arrested and are assisting with further investigations.
Abigail, who has been left traumatized by the ordeal, is calling for the suspects to be punished for their actions. The GACL continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as necessary.
