Ghanaian gospel artist Nicholas Omane Acheampong criticized journalist Auntie Naa for her recent interview with Adwoa Penamang, who claims to be the wife of ailing artist Yaw Sarpong. Acheampong called the interview unprofessional and unnecessary, suggesting that Auntie Naa should have considered the potential harm it could cause to Sarpong and his family.

Speaking on Peace FM with Kwasi Aboagye, Acheampong noted that Auntie Naa’s decision to allow Penamang to make negative comments about Sarpong on air was a mistake. He felt that such sensitive family matters, especially involving an unwell person, should have been handled differently to avoid public dispute and tarnishing Sarpong’s image.

Acheampong emphasized that Auntie Naa should have thought about the repercussions and engaged in a more responsible journalism approach. He believed that if this kind of interview becomes the norm, the formal education in journalism might lose its value. Acheampong also mentioned that since Sarpong’s situation involves personal and marital issues rather than criminal offenses, the interview should have been more cautious and respectful of his reputation.

Adwoa Penamang had revealed during the interview with Auntie Naa on Oyerepa FM about feeling neglected by Sarpong’s family since his illness began. She expressed her concerns over Sarpong’s family choosing Maame Tiwaa over her to care for him, which she found distressing.

In response, Yaw Sarpong clarified that he divorced Penamang 20 years ago and denied any romantic involvement with Maame Tiwaa. Meanwhile, Prophet J.Y. Adu of New Jerusalem Chapel, Kumasi, explained that Sarpong’s illness is considered spiritual, not medical, citing the failure of medical treatments as a reason for seeking spiritual care.

Overall, Acheampong’s critique reflects a concern for responsible journalism and the potential impact of media coverage on individuals and their families, especially in delicate situations like Yaw Sarpong’s illness and personal life.
