Four police officers in Kenya faced arrest after being discovered drinking at a bar, contravening a directive issued by the governor of Kirinyaga County, Anne Waiguru, which mandated the closure of all bars in the region.
Governor Waiguru implemented the order following the deaths of over 20 individuals in the county due to the consumption of alcohol contaminated with ethanol.
“I have today ordered the closure of all bars in Kirinyaga to pave the way for fresh vetting. Those bars found operating without a license or with previous cases of selling unauthorized products will not be permitted to reopen,” stated Ms. Waiguru during a mass burial ceremony for some of the victims.
The officers were apprehended on Sunday during a bar raid conducted after a local resident alerted the authorities.
While the bar’s owner was also taken into custody, several customers managed to evade arrest, according to the Citizen Digital news website.
