Commissioner of the Gauteng Police Lieutenant-General Elias Mawela, will on Tuesday, provide the Portfolio Committee on Community Safety of the Legislature with the third quarter crime figures for the fiscal year 2022-2023.
He’ll give a description of the crimes perpetrated in Gauteng between October and December 2022.
Mawela will also inform the committee about efforts to combat crime, including as gang-related violence in Johannesburg’s Westbury and Eldorado Park.
Crime statistics showed an increase in murder, rape, and other serious contact crimes, according to the quarterly crime statistics for the third quarter of 2022/2023 released in February by Police Minister Bheki Cele.
In 2022, police recorded an increase of 696 murders in the third quarter between October and December.
