The Mortuaries and Funeral Facilities Agency (MoFFA) has declared its intent to ban the importation of metal caskets into the nation as a measure to better control burial space.

MoFFA has stated that the use of metal caskets for burial purposes is considered a violation of the law.

The agency has explained that the law disapproves of the use of metal caskets because they do not decompose like wooden coffins.

This decision has been prompted by concerns that Ghana is facing a shortage of burial space. Dr. Yaw Twerefour, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MoFFA, made this announcement during an interview with the media.

Dr. Yaw Twerefour further clarified that MoFFA’s responsibilities encompass the control, licensing, and regulation of all aspects related to the handling of the deceased, including storage, burial, transportation, and disposal within the country.

He emphasized that MoFFA is currently engaged in discussions with various stakeholders to arrive at a final decision regarding the importation of metal caskets into the country.

He stressed that while the use of metal caskets may be fashionable, it contradicts the law, as these caskets were originally designed for transporting deceased bodies to contain droplets from the deceased body.
