The Head of Public Affairs at the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), Awal Mohammed, declined to confirm the disbursement of GH¢177 million from the Controller and Accountant General’s office to the Ministry of Health for nursing trainee allowances.
During an appearance on TV3’s New Day, Mohammed refrained from providing a clear answer when questioned about the fund transfer. He stated, “I am not the Controller and Accountant General,” emphasizing his lack of direct involvement in the financial transactions.
This development follows Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s pledge to release GH¢177 million to the Health Ministry within 72 hours to cover trainee nurses’ allowances.
Dr. Bawumia made this commitment at an International Nurses Day event in Accra on May 14, 2024, responding to a query from a final-year trainee nurse during a youth engagement in the Bono East region.
“I wish to assure the nursing trainees that by Thursday this week, the Controller [And Accountant-General] is transferring an amount of GH¢177 million to the Ministry of Health to pay the trainee allowances,” Dr. Bawumia had stated.
Despite the Vice President’s assurance, Mohammed, also an NPP Communicator, could not provide an update on the funds’ release when pressed for details.
He reiterated that Dr. Bawumia had stated the money would be transferred on Thursday, May 16, but he couldn’t confirm its actual status.
He reiterated, “I don’t know that for a fact at the moment but what I’m telling you is that he [Dr. Bawumia] says the money will be transferred yesterday [Thursday, May 16].”
