The Deputy National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Malik Basintale, has strongly rebuked President Akufo-Addo for the recent commissioning of what he terms as nine-year-old AMERI power plants, now renamed the Kumasi 1 Thermal Power Plant (K1TPP).
President Nana Akufo-Addo formally inaugurated the Kumasi 1 Thermal Power Plant at Anwomaso in the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, April 17, 2024.
In response, the opposition NDC has criticised the Akufo-Addo administration and the NPP for vehemently opposing the procurement of the AMERI power plants during the Mahama administration between 2013 and 2015.
During a TV3 New Day interview on Friday, April 19, the NDC’s Deputy Communication Officer stressed that the current government should not take credit for projects initiated by previous administrations.
“If you’re talented at organising naming ceremonies, learn to give birth. You cannot decide to consistently exercise your talent in performing naming ceremonies for things that have been executed by your predecessor,” Malik Basintale stated.
He also questioned the purpose of the commissioning ceremony for plants that have been operational in the country for nearly a decade, stating,“What was the so-called commission all about?” he quizzed, adding, “You organised a naming ceremony for a nine-year-old baby and then you want us to clap for you.”
The African and Middle East Resources Investment (AMERI) Group officially handed over the 10-unit power plants to the Ghanaian government after completing their contractual term under a “built, own, operate, and transfer” agreement.
President Akufo-Addo also praised the contributions of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), and Ghana National Petroleum Commission (GNPC) in realizing this project.
