Television personality, Berlinda Addardey known popularly as Berla Mundi has disclosed her unique taste sensation by combining the Ghanaian staple “Gob3” beans with crunchy plantain chips.
During her appearance on the Day Show discussing the 3FM “Gob3” festival, Berla shared nostalgic memories of her school days, where she and her peers would turn their regular Wednesday or Thursday beans routine into a delightful experience by adding plantain chips purchased from a nearby shop.
Berla emphasised the sheer satisfaction of this unconventional pairing, revealing that she enjoyed it without the traditional addition of gari.
“I remember when I was in school, they would give us beans every Wednesday or Thursday, so I used to go and buy plantain chips,
So in Motown, just opposite the dining hall, there was this shop that we bought from, so we just bought and added it to it. “
The discussion took an interesting turn when AJ Sarpong, another participant on the show, revealed her initial association of “Gob3” with the dish red-red.
AJ’s childhood perception was of beans stew and soft plantain, and she expressed surprise upon discovering the practice of consuming raw beans with oil, taking about two years to adjust to the plain beans concept.
“It was always stew, so it was very interesting to grow up and realize that people eat raw beans with oil,” AJ Sarpong remarked
“Gob3,” a Ghanaian dish of beans and gari known for its simplicity and budget-friendly nature, has evolved with exciting additions like fried plantains and eggs.
Meanwhile, plantain chips, the crunchy snacks made from thinly sliced, unripe plantains, traditionally deep-fried, offer a healthier option when baked.
