Nigerian sensation Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu MFR, known professionally as Burna Boy extends gratitude to the City Council of Boston, Massachusetts, for the remarkable recognition bestowed upon him.
The city officially declared March 2nd as “Burna Boy Day” in acknowledgment and celebration of the musician’s impactful contributions.
A formal statement released by the Boston City Council, endorsed by Councillor Ruthzee Louijeune, highlighted Burna Boy’s commendable efforts in using his performances and advocacy to amplify the voices of marginalised communities, advocating for their recognition and rights.
Burna Boy, expressing his dedication to uniting the world through music, emphasised the commonality that transcends differences among people globally.
In a social media post on X, he shared his immense honour, accompanied by a photo showcasing him proudly holding the Boston City Council’s declaration while on stage.
“I feel incredibly honoured and privileged! Thank you, Boston! The goal has always been the same, to bring the world together. We are all so different but all the same! 2nd of March a.k.a Burna Boy Day,” the post exclaimed.
The Boston City Council, in a press release last week, lauded Burna Boy for embracing his Nigerian and African identity, fusing it with contemporary sounds to create music that resonates globally.
This, they noted, challenges stereotypes about African artistry and opens doors for aspiring artists from similar backgrounds.
“Boston’s commitment to recognizing and celebrating culture and diversity is evident in the range of cultural events, festivals, and community initiatives that showcase the city’s multicultural landscape; and Burna Boy’s legacy serves as a reminder of possibility, reminding us to continue amplifying voices that have long been silenced or overlooked.”
The official statement concludes by designating March 2, 2024, as Burna Boy Day in the City of Boston, solidifying the musician’s lasting impact on the city’s cultural landscape.
