In preparation for the upcoming 2024 general elections, the President of the National House of Chiefs, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II, has advocated for a paradigm shift towards issues-based campaigns.
Delivering a message of decorum and civility, he urged politicians to maintain decency in their campaigns, steering away from insults or adversarial attacks on their opponents.
Speaking at a convened meeting in Kumasi, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II directed his call not only to politicians but also to various stakeholders such as the Electoral Commission, political parties, media, election observers, and the electorate.
Stressing the paramount importance of free and fair elections, he underscored the need for campaign discourse to center around substantive issues rather than personal attacks.
Furthermore, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II emphasized the pivotal role of the Electoral Commission(EC) and other stakeholders in fostering an environment conducive to free, fair, and peaceful elections.
He expressed the hope that, in the aftermath of the elections, losers would gracefully accept their defeat. Emphasizing the exorbitant cost of electoral violence, he urged everyone to prioritize national unity, recognizing that there is only one country—Ghana.
“The EC working with all stakeholders should continue to promote the atmosphere for free, fair and peaceful elections so that losers will accept their loss in good faith.
“Electoral violence is expensive and should be avoided at all costs. We have only one country. That is Ghana.”
With the scheduled polls set for December 7, 2024, Ghanaians anticipate the democratic process of electing a new president and Members of Parliament.
