Spain forward Nico Williams has revealed that Ghanaian icon Asamoah Gyan was his childhood hero.
The Athletic Bilbao winger, who has Ghanaian heritage, mentioned that he admired the former Black Stars captain during his youth.
Williams, who is the younger brother of Ghana striker Inaki Williams, made a notable impact at the recent European Championship, where he scored and was named Man of the Match in the final against England.
In an interview with 3 Sports during his visit to Ghana, Williams expressed his admiration for Gyan, saying, “When I was young, around six years old, I liked Asamoah Gyan.
He is our best striker. He scored a lot of goals. I loved Asamoah Gyan.”
Gyan, Ghana’s all-time top scorer with 51 goals in 109 matches, also holds the record for the most goals scored by an African player at the World Cup.
He retired from football last year at the age of 38.
Williams, whose future at Bilbao is uncertain, is on the path to a legendary career himself, having helped Spain secure their fourth European Championship title.
