Pep Guardiola has officially stated that Erling Haaland is ready to make his comeback for Manchester City in Wednesday’s match against Burnley, marking the end of his nearly two-month absence due to a foot injury.
Haaland’s last appearance was in the 1-0 defeat against Aston Villa on December 6. He resumed training during Manchester City’s journey to Saudi Arabia for the FIFA Club World Cup before the Christmas break.
Despite missing the past 10 games, the 22-year-old striker has managed to score an impressive 19 goals this season. His return to the squad against Burnley this week is eagerly anticipated by fans and adds a significant boost to Manchester City’s attacking prowess.
“First time he is back,” Guardiola told a news conference on Tuesday.
“We have all the squad, we are stronger. He is an important player for us.”
Pep Guardiola has hinted at different approaches for the return of two key players for Manchester City.
While he previously suggested a gradual reintroduction for midfielder Kevin De Bruyne, who has been sidelined for five months with a hamstring injury, Guardiola indicated that Erling Haaland might be ready for an immediate comeback into the team at the Etihad on Wednesday.
The contrasting strategies reflect the careful management of player fitness and the specific circumstances surrounding their respective injuries.
“Haaland had a stress of the bone, so it is a completely different approach, but step by step,” he said.
As Manchester City prepares to face Burnley, they bring with them the momentum of a seven-match winning streak, which notably includes a 1-0 victory over Tottenham in the FA Cup on Friday.
Heading into the second half of the season, Pep Guardiola’s team is positioned five points behind league leaders Liverpool in the Premier League. The pursuit of a record fourth consecutive title adds an extra layer of significance to their upcoming fixtures.
City’s form and ambitions underscore their determination to maintain their winning streak and secure another title in the ongoing season.
“It’s one game at a time,” Guardiola said.
“We made these [winning] runs in the past because it was just one game. It’s Burnley, Burnley, Burnley.
“It doesn’t matter what we have done in the past, but I am delighted we have almost all of the squad fit. [Manuel Akanji] is back. He trained really well without knee problems and John [Stones] as well.
“That is the best news for an important part of the season. Of course, with the FA Cup and Champions League, it is important to have everybody.”
In the midst of recent revelations about England defender Kyle Walker’s private life, Pep Guardiola has affirmed that Walker will continue as the captain for Manchester City.
Walker addressed the situation in a media interview, providing an explanation for his actions and offering an apology to his family. Guardiola, while acknowledging the circumstances, has decided that the 33-year-old will retain his role as club captain.
