Guru NKZ‘s campaign has encountered a setback due to alleged sabotage, according to his campaign spokesperson, Andy Asante Okyere Mensah.
In an exclusive interview with Prince Benjamin (PB) on Entertainment Capital on Accra 100.5 FM on August 17, 2024, Okyere Mensah revealed that Guru has been disqualified from the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) presidential race at the University of Ghana (UG), Legon.
The UG-SRC Vetting Committee found that Guru did not meet the residency requirement outlined in the UG-SRC constitution, which led to his disqualification.
Okyere Mensah claimed that Guru was poised to win the election by a significant margin and suggested that the disqualification was an effort to prevent this outcome.
“Let’s do things right and be honest about it.
“Guru would have won the election by a landslide, hands down. This is what some people want to avoid. It’s definitely [a sabotage],” Andy Asante Okyere Mensah said.
He clarified that the alleged sabotage was not orchestrated by UG management but by factions within the student body and the SRC itself.
He declined to name names but clarified it was not a UG management-led sabotage but one by “the students, the student body, the SRC”.
“We’re working on [investigating] it and at the appropriate time, we’ll know those behind it,” Okyere Mensah disclosed.
The campaign team is currently seeking clarification on the disqualification by addressing the issue with the election commission, the UG-SRC judiciary board, and the Dean of Students.
“We’re trying as a team to exhaust the internal mechanism to see what comes of it” before any escalation, he added.
Okyere Mensah expressed hope that UG management would review the situation and consider a constitutional reform that could allow Guru to run despite his nonresident status.
Guru, who is a level 300 student and was running in his final opportunity for the SRC presidency, was campaigning alongside Jeffery Adu-Yeboah (Jay Lit) for the vice presidential position as part of the Maralit ticket.
When approached for a comment, Guru declined due to legal advice.
