Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has voiced strong opposition to the substantial funds being allocated to the National Cathedral project.
In his view, this allocation represents a misplaced priority that overlooks critical collective goals in favour of individual objectives.
Mahama emphasised that the presidency should primarily serve the collective welfare of the people, with decisions and expenditures reflecting this overarching objective.
He highlighted pressing issues within the education sector, such as the lack of textbooks, desks, school feeding programs, and well-ventilated classrooms, which he believes deserve immediate attention and investment.
Expressing his stance to the media, Mahama stated that he would have directed the GHC400 million earmarked for the National Cathedral towards a range of essential projects within education and other vital sectors.
He firmly stated, “GHC400 Million spent on the National Cathedral project is not right; there are more concerning issues in the educational sector which merit attention, such as school feeding programs, textbooks, among others. God will be angry with me if I use GHC400 Million to build a National Cathedral.”
Criticism of the National Cathedral project extends beyond Mahama’s remarks, with many individuals nationwide questioning its necessity and timing, particularly given the prevailing economic challenges facing the country.
Since its inception in 2020, the project initiated by President Akufo-Addo has not yielded tangible benefits, further fueling public discontent and scrutiny.
