Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia announced an ambitious plan to make smartphones accessible and affordable for Ghanaians if his party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is re-elected in the upcoming December 7, elections.
Speaking at a campaign event, the NPP flagbearer said his next government will partner with mobile phone manufacturers to allow Ghanaians to purchase smartphones on credit and pay in affordable monthly instalments.
Dr. Bawumia argued that in today’s digital world, access to an affordable smartphone is essential for empowering citizens, providing educational opportunities, enabling commerce, and keeping families connected.
“We will make mobile phones accesible, my government will partner with phone manufacturers so that Ghanaians can afford them on credit and pay 1 or 2 cedis every month.
“Access to smartphones is no longer a luxury but a necessity. It opens up opportunities for education, business, and staying connected with loved ones. By making smartphones affordable, we are not only enhancing connectivity but also fostering an environment where every Ghanaian can thrive in the digital age,” he said.
Netizens have taken to social media to express their thought.
Some expressed satisfaction with his policy whilst others ridiculed the policy.
A netizen asserted “Bawumia’s promise is a useless one but I am NPP, I must accept it.”
