The ceasefire in Gaza has been going on for six days and will end soon. Israel and Hamas are talking about extending the ceasefire. Israel thinks there is a chance to make a deal, and Hamas has shown that they are willing to discuss it.
Top officials from Israel, the United States, and Egypt are talking in Qatar about making a new agreement. Qatar helped mediate the first peace deal. This could mean that the first men or soldiers who were taken by Hamas during the attack on 7 October might be set free.
Israeli leaders have said that they want to keep the current system, where three Palestinian women and teenagers are set free from Israeli prisons for every Israeli hostage that is returned.
I wonder if Hamas will ask for anything else to release Israeli officers.
Over 160 people are still being held captive, including a 10-month-old baby who is the youngest hostage. Hamas says it does not have all of them, and that some are with other groups. It’s not clear where the others are.
A longer period of peace will help the people in Gaza by bringing more supplies like food, water, and medicine that they really need.
However, some people in Israel might not agree with a longer ceasefire. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised to start attacking Gaza again to “get rid of Hamas”. Some people are worried that if there is a long break, Hamas will have time to get stronger and plan how to defend themselves.
