Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) in a bid to combat Iodine Deficiency Disorder (IDD) in Ghana organized a significant gathering with market women in Agblobloshie.
The event, termed a grand durbar or open forum, aimed to emphasize the importance of selling only iodized salt to consumers.
Headed by Dr. Mimi Delese Darko, the CEO of the FDA, the forum stressed the pivotal role of iodine in producing thyroid hormones and its consequent impact on health.
“Insist on sourcing iodized salt from suppliers and encourage buyers to use iodized salt,” the Chief Executive Officer of the FDA, Dr Mimi Delese Darko, told the market women.
Dr. Darko urged the market women to source iodized salt from reliable suppliers and educate buyers on the benefits of using iodized salt.
The forum was part of a larger initiative to ensure the success of the Ghana Universal Salt Iodization program.
This program mandates salt producers to fortify their products with the appropriate amount of iodine, a crucial step in eradicating IDD and promoting public health.
Dr. Darko highlighted the vendors’ responsibility in promoting iodized salt consumption, describing them as custodians of health who play a vital role in ensuring the well-being of families.
“Let us ensure that every household in Ghana has access to iodized salt, the simple yet powerful tool for a healthier tomorrow, a symbol of our commitment to a brighter, healthier future for all Ghanaians,” she added.
