Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has committed to enhancing Ghana’s security by installing 50,000 CCTV cameras in major towns across the country.
Announcing this plan during his campaign in the Dome-Kwabenya constituency, Dr. Bawumia stated that a recent security assessment revealed the need for 50,000 CCTV cameras to adequately monitor roads in regional and district capitals.
He acknowledged that while the government has initiated CCTV installations, coverage remains incomplete.
In addition to his security proposal, Dr. Bawumia highlighted the significance of adopting a “Buy Ghana First” policy. He argued that by prioritising locally produced goods, Ghanaians can stimulate business growth and create more job opportunities.
During his campaign tour, Dr. Bawumia engaged with religious leaders, including clergy, imams, and chiefs in the Ashongman Estate area.
Former Speaker of Parliament, Mike Ocquaye, lauded Dr. Bawumia for his intellectual prowess and significant contributions to the NPP.
“When there were controversies about election matters and we had gathered a lot of information, Frank Davis and others toiled but how to put the things together in an acceptable formula for court, that work was done by Dr. Bawumia, today he has another name called Mr. pink sheet.”
“All matters as to how we use the pink sheet to look after the controversies of the election, that was the man who stood in court. You could see the star in him, but I say it’s a gift. If you don’t take advantage of such a gift, it’s your own cause.”
Dr. Bawumia also outlined the achievements of the NPP government and emphasised the need for enhanced security measures, including installing CCTV cameras.
“I called national security, and I said what will it take for Ghana to have CCTV on all the streets in all of our regional capitals and all of our district capitals so that we can see any crime that is taking place, we can at least have a clue.”
“So, they came back to me, and they said they need 50000 CCTV cameras, and they are going to get 50000 CCTV cameras, which we are going to provide so that the police can have visibility for every movement because we don’t have many police officers.”
