Don’t let the contractor go-scot-free – Safety expert on Buduburam blast

Professional in Occupational Safety and Health has called for accountability from the contractor responsible for the recent explosion in Buduburam that resulted in three fatalities and over 30 injuries.

The tragic incident occurred on Monday, October 14, 2024, during a controlled rock blast related to the ongoing road expansion project on the Kasoa-Buduburam route.

In an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, Mr. Antwi raised serious concerns about the contractor’s apparent neglect of essential safety measures, which he believes could have averted the catastrophe.

He emphasised the need for stricter adherence to safety protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.

“The contractor should be held responsible,” he said.

He stressed the necessity of complying with Section 175 of the Mineral Commission’s LI 2177, which outlines the essential procedures required prior to initiating any blasting activities.

His comments highlight the increasing public frustration surrounding the unfortunate incident, leading to widespread demands for accountability and a stricter enforcement of safety standards in both construction and blasting operations.

The tragic event has intensified calls for a review of safety protocols to ensure that such accidents do not occur in the future.

“So if the blast has been done and investigations commence and it establishes that none of this information is found after the incident then they should be held responsible for their actions and inactions that took place,” he stated.
