Deputy Education Minister, John Ntim Fordjour, has backed the decision by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) to recall a texbook published by Excellence Publications for Primary 4 students as well as sanction its publishers.

The book contains content about religion and Christianity which have been described as inaccurate and misleading.

The book, among other things, blames religion for an increase in poverty in Ghana, as well as increased discrimination against women in the country. This has caused an uproar among the citizenry.

Reacting to the book, the Deputy Education Minister who is also the MP for Assin South, said: “I entirely condemn the rather obnoxious content found in a textbook published by ‘Excellence Publications’ and smuggled into the market for unsuspecting learners.

While condemning the book’s appalling nature, he criticized its presence in the market, where unsuspecting learners may encounter misleading material.

“The content is appalling and misconceived. I support NaCCA’s swift action to recall the books and apply sanction,” he said.

He further emphasised on the crucial role of religion in the country, thus, urging writers to deal with the topic cautiously.

Ghana is most peaceful for a reason, and the important place of religion cannot be undermined,” he said.
