On Friday, July 5, 2024, Ghana’s Parliament members and staff will showcase their football talents in a ceremonial match against retired Black Stars players.
This game, a prelude to the Democracy Cup clash between Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak, will see Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin leading his team against a squad of retired Black Stars legends, captained by Stephen Appiah.
Announcing the match as part of Parliament’s 30th-anniversary celebrations, Speaker Bagbin encouraged Parliamentarians to actively participate in the anniversary events and to prepare for the game.
Bagbin also outlined the planned activities, noting that Parliament is partnering with Primeval Consult to commemorate the 1992 constitution’s enactment and the Fourth Republic’s Parliament successfully.
“Due to the commendable efforts of this parliament, a few partners and stakeholders have decided to support our work and have proposed the establishment of what they call the Democracy Cup, which will enhance the celebration of our 30th anniversary of the 1992 constitution and this parliament of the Fourth Republic,” said Bagbin.
“The inaugural event will take place on Friday, July 5, 2024, at the Accra Sports Stadium, featuring a match between Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak.”
The anniversary celebrations will feature a variety of activities, including a lecture on Parliament’s role in Ghana’s flourishing democracy, mock parliamentary sessions, debates, peace walks, and fun games.
