Ousmane Dembele’s transfer from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain has been officially confirmed by the French club, as they exercised his €50.4 million (£43 million/$55 million) release clause.
The completion of Dembele’s move was finalised by PSG following the successful completion of the France international’s medical examinations on Friday.
In the early days of August, PSG formally notified Barcelona of their intention to activate a “private” clause embedded within Dembele’s contract.
This clause ensured that his transfer fee would not exceed €50 million, even though the standard release clause was set at €100 million (£86 million or $108 million).
Dembele has committed to a five-year contract that ties him to the Parc des Princes until at least the summer of 2028.
Barcelona originally acquired Dembele from Borussia Dortmund in 2017, but persistent injuries limited his appearances to a mere 23 during the 2017-18 season.
He experienced a resurgence under the management of Xavi during the 2022 season, accumulating 11 goals and 21 assists across his final two seasons at Camp Nou.
Departing Barcelona after 185 matches and 62 goals, Dembele also boasts an impressive record of three league titles, two Copas del Rey, and two Spanish Super Cups.
“I’m delighted to be joining Paris Saint-Germain and can’t wait to play for my new club. I hope I can continue to grow here and make all the club’s fans proud,” he stated after signing his new PSG contract.
Dembele has been signed by PSG as they prepare for life without Kylian Mbappe. The Parisians remain adamant about offloading the 2018 World Cup winner, but the player insists on spending the 2023–24 season in Paris before walking away as a free agent next summer.
