Retired Commissioner of the Ghana Police Service, COP George Alex Mensah, has reiterated his allegation that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, was directly involved in a plot to secretly record him and other senior police officers.

COP Mensah claims that Bugri Naabu, the former Northern Regional chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), who has admitted to recording his meeting with them, collaborated with Dr. Dampare in recording the conversation.

He expressed this view during an interview with Evans Mensah on Joynews, emphasizing that there was an objective behind the recording. COP Mensah also suggested that the actual recording could be obtained by contacting the IGP, as he believed Dr. Dampare was aware of the situation and was involved in setting it up.

“Of course there is an objective and that is why I told the committee that if they want the real, actual recording they should call the IGP. I said it at the committee because he knew something about it. He and Bugri Naabu set it up,” he stated.

The audio recording in question has sparked a seven-member parliamentary committee investigation. In the recording, COP Mensah and two other police officers are heard discussing political support to remove the IGP and promoting COP Mensah as the ideal replacement. They described him as a true supporter and member of the ruling New Patriotic Party who could help the party maintain power in 2024. Additionally, they questioned the competence of Dr. Dampare and accused him of being an ally of the opposition National Democratic Congress.

Bugri Naabu, who recorded the tape, testified before the parliamentary committee, stating that he presented it as evidence to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

COP Mensah’s claim is that the IGP was the actual instigator of the recorded conversation, setting them up in collaboration with someone else.

“He and somebody plotted and put that recording machine there and called us; called us and invited us to come because he knew he has plotted that thing there… yes, he set it up. He set us up, that is what he did.

“I don’t know [his intention] he must say it. He did it in connivance with somebody,” he stated.
