Black Sherif achieves milestone as first Ghanaian to surpass 500 million streams on Boomplay

Ghanaian music sensation Black Sherif, born Mohammed Ismail Sherif Kwaku Frimpong, has made history as the first artist from Ghana to exceed 500 million streams on Boomplay, one of Africa’s top digital music platforms.

Boomplay announced the milestone on X (formerly Twitter), celebrating the achievement with a post that read: “KILOS MILLIONS! Congratulations to Iron Boy @blacksherif_ and his fans for hitting 500 million total streams on #Boomplay.”

In response to the news, Black Sherif expressed profound gratitude to his supporters: “This is a dream come true. I am incredibly thankful for the love and support from my fans both in Ghana and globally. This is only the beginning, and I’m excited to share more music with you all,” he said.

Black Sherif’s rise to prominence began in 2021 with his breakout single “First Sermon,” followed by the successful “Second Sermon.”

These tracks positioned him as a rising star in Ghana’s music scene.

His consistent release of popular tracks has only added to his growing reputation, with each new song gaining increasing acclaim.

His achievements have been widely recognized, including being named Artiste of the Year at the 2023 Telecel Ghana Music Awards and the 3 Music Awards. Notably, he also won the “Best International Flow” award at the 2023 BET Hip-Hop Awards, becoming only the second African artist to receive this honor, following Sarkodie.

A recent Grammy article highlighted Black Sherif as a significant figure in the Hiplife genre, which merges hip-hop with traditional Ghanaian highlife music.

The article praised his distinctive style, noting his rise to fame began with the 2019 track “Money,” with international acclaim following the release of “First Sermon” and “Second Sermon.”

The “Second Sermon Remix,” endorsed by Burna Boy, further boosted his profile, leading to hit tracks like “Kweku The Traveller,” “Soja,” and a notable feature on Odumodu Blvck’s “Wotowoto Seasoning.”

With performances on global stages such as the MOBO Awards, Wireless Festival, and AfroNation 2023, Black Sherif has firmly established himself as a global music icon. His recent success on Boomplay marks another milestone in his groundbreaking career.
