Bawumia urged to set up scholarship scheme for Pharmacist to pursue specialization

The Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana has called on the government to create a scholarship program aimed at enabling more individuals to pursue specialization.

Dr. Samuel Donkor, the President of the Society, highlighted that while there is an institution for specialization, the lack of financial resources prevents many individuals from furthering their education. Consequently, the Society suffers from a shortage of specialists.

“We need specialists in pharmacy. We have oncologist specialists in pharmacy, we have cardiovascular training specialists, and in a whole lot of fields. The government has established Ghana College, yet our pharmacists going to Ghana College are not being sponsored and that is on our agenda – human resource empowerment.

“Please look into it and let us get the sponsorship for pharmacists to be able to go to college for specialization,” he said.

He shared these remarks during a stakeholder engagement session with the Pharmaceutical Society on April 4, chaired by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party.

In response, the Vice President vowed to elevate the pharmaceutical industry to excellence within the sub-region.

He pledged to replicate efforts to enhance infrastructure for training pharmacy students, akin to the support provided for the construction of the hostel at Trinity Theological Seminary through the GETFund.

“We are also doing that even for Kayaye. Yes, we have skilled training centres that I would be commissioning next to train Kayaye. We build these things.

“So why can’t we build a major pharmaceutical training center for our pharmacists who would deliver the goods to us? So, I fully agree to this,” he added.
