The National Communications Director of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has strongly criticized Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, accusing him of deflecting responsibility for the economic challenges facing the nation.

Gyamfi contends that both President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Bawumia are collectively responsible for the economic turmoil attributed to the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

During a morning show discussion on Metro TV, Gyamfi asserted, “The primus inter pares in this government is Nana Addo, his words and responsibilities to people… Akufo-Addo times without number has told us when it comes to the economy, the man in charge is Bawumia.”

He challenged the Vice President’s attempt to downplay his role and shift blame, emphasizing that Bawumia is acting like an opposition leader within his own government.

Gyamfi accused Bawumia of pretending to be detached from the government’s economic mismanagement while highlighting the Vice President’s acknowledgment of the administration’s failures.

He remarked, “Vice President Bawumia knows that the government that he is now a part of, which he is pretending not to be a part of, he is pretending now to be an opposition leader in his own government.”

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia clarified his role as the chairman of the Economic Management Team (EMT), asserting that he lacked the authority to make decisions.

Addressing the nation on Wednesday, January 7, 2024, during his presentation as the flagbearer of the governing New Patriotic Party, Dr. Bawumia emphasised that the EMT, as a sub-committee to Cabinet, did not possess decision-making powers.

“I am grateful to have been appointed as Chairman of the Economic Management Team (EMT). However, we do not wield any decision-making authority as a sub-committee to Cabinet,” he remarked.

Dr. Bawumia underscored that his role primarily involved offering advice to the President’s Cabinet, expressing pride in the quality of counsel provided over the years.
