Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has expressed his willingness to serve as the running mate of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia if selected by the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer.
Gyan, who has openly shown his support for the NPP government, stated that he would consider it an “honour” to potentially become the second gentleman of the country if given the opportunity.
During an interview with Captain Smart on Onua Maakye on Monday, April 15, Gyan responded with laughter when asked if he harbors ambitions to become Dr. Bawumia’s running mate before giving his answer.
The all-time Black Stars top scorer said, “Honour is something everybody likes. I won’t reject it but I know that’s big.”
However, he clarified that his current focus is on contributing to the development of sports in the country by leveraging his experience and knowledge.
Gyan’s association with the NPP became prominent when he attended Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s vision statement event at the UPSA in Accra in February 2024.
Subsequently, the former Ghanaian player was appointed as the chairman of the Sports Sub-Committee of Dr. Bawumia’s manifesto committee for the 2024 election.
In his role, Gyan will assist the NPP flagbearer in formulating sports policies for the party’s 2024 manifesto.
One of the notable initiatives proposed by Gyan since his appointment is the upcoming All Regional Games scheduled for November 2024.
