In the aftermath of the devastating explosion that claimed lives and homes in Appiatse two years ago, residents are finally seeing a glimmer of hope as they take ownership of their new homes.

The tragic incident resulted in the loss of 13 lives and left over 100 injured.

However, today marks a moment of joy as keys to the newly built homes are being handed over to the beneficiaries.

The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, led the official inauguration of the revitalized Appiatse town on Thursday, May 2, 2024.

Speaking to JoyNews, Lands Minister Samuel Abu Jinapor highlighted the significant improvements these new homes bring to the residents’ lives.

“We have constructed 124 housing units, ranging from one bedroom to seven bedrooms, equipped with first-class sanitary facilities. The water harvesting system is designed sustainably, considering the heavy rainfall in the area, aiming to restore and even enhance the living conditions,” he explained.

While the tragic incident was attributed to negligence and misconduct by a mining company, the government has decided not to pursue prosecution.

Minister Jinapor clarified, “The chapter regarding prosecution is closed, and we are focusing on administrative fines. However, additional funds are required to further support the affected community.”

The reconstructed housing scheme stands as a beacon of resilience and recovery for the Appiatse residents, offering them a fresh start and renewed hope for the future.
