A video circulating on social media shows a motorcyclist in a distressing state, unable to move.
Reports indicate the rider was under the influence of tramadol, leaving him incapacitated.
In the video, the unnamed motorcyclist is seen clutching his bike, immobile, as shocked passersby look on.
The Ministry of Health has recently banned the manufacturing, importation, and sale of Tramadol and Codeine.
The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) issued a public notice stating that no one may sell Tramadol or Tramadol-containing products above the registered dosage forms and strengths.
Additionally, all registered Tramadol products must be dispensed as “Prescription Only Medicines” and are restricted to health facilities at or above the District Hospital level.
The FDA also emphasized that Codeine-containing cough syrups are banned, with their registration and market authorizations revoked.
The Executive Instruments (E.I. 168 for Tramadol and E.I. 167 for Codeine) were enacted under the authority granted by section 116 of the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851).
All approved Codeine drugs will now be re-classified as “Controlled Drugs” and dispensed only with a valid prescription.
