23 women have announced their intention to run for parliamentary seats in Accra

A total of 23 women have submitted their nominations to compete for parliamentary positions across various constituencies in the Greater Accra region.

This group includes nine sitting female Members of Parliament (MPs) and three independent candidates who are contesting in the Adentan, Sege, and Shai-Osudoku constituencies.

According to statistics from the Electoral Commission (EC), the final tally of candidates includes 114 individuals, with 23 women (20%) and 91 men (80%) competing for 34 parliamentary seats in Greater Accra.

Among the candidates are Gloria Owusu (NPP) from Trobu, Faustina Elikplim Akurugu (NDC), and Dora Nyarko (PNC), who are all vying for the Dome-Kwabenya seat.

Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe (NDC) is contesting in the Ada constituency.

Lydia Seyram Alhassan (NPP) is the incumbent for Ayawaso West Wuogon, while Gifty Botchway (PNC) is also contesting in the same constituency. Additionally, Darkoa Newman (NPP), the current MP, is seeking re-election for Okaikwei South.

The list of candidates also includes Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah Adjei (NPP), the current MP for Akropong, who has filed to contest in Okaikwei North, alongside Theresa Lardi Awuni (NDC), the sitting MP for the same constituency.

Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie (NPP) and Ewurabena Aubynn (NDC) are both running for the Ablekuma North seat.

Ursula Gifty Owusu-Ekuful (NPP), the incumbent MP for Ablekuma West, is seeking re-election, while Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings (NDC) is contesting in Korle-Klottey.

Other notable candidates include Rita Naa Odorley Sowah (NDC), the current MP for Dadekotopon; Lucky Mensah (NDP) in Ledzokuku; Agnes Naa Momo Lartey (NDC) for Krowor; Ebi Bright (NDC) in Tema Central; Akosua Asaa Manu (NPP) for Adentan; and Hagar Asiedu, running as an Independent candidate in Adentan.

Additionally, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo (NDC), the incumbent MP for Shai-Osudoku, will be contesting alongside Gifty Hawa Hammond (Independent) in the same constituency, Lasi Eunice (Independent) in Sege, and Suzette Naa Norley Dornukie Norteye (NPP) in Ada.

In related news, the Electoral Commission has cleared two women to run as presidential candidates in the upcoming December elections.

They are Madam Akua Donkor of the Ghana Freedom Party and Nana Frimpomaa Sarpong Kumankumah from the Convention People’s Party.
