“If you know, you know” – Asamoah Gyan on being named the flashiest player by English coach

Former Sunderland forward, Asamoah Gyan, has reacted to a recent remark by English coach Steve Bruce, who described Gyan as the most flamboyant player he has managed throughout his career.

Steve Bruce, who was at the helm of Sunderland during the 2010/2011 season when Gyan played there on loan, has fondly recalled Gyan’s distinctive style.

According to Bruce, Gyan stood out as the most stylish player he has ever coached.

Gyan’s fashion-forward approach evidently made a memorable impact on Bruce, who highlights Gyan’s unique flair as a standout characteristic from his time at Sunderland.

“Without question, we had a kid called Asamoah Gyan who we signed at Sunderland,” he said in a TikTok Q&A challenge.

Asamoah Gyan took to X (formerly Twitter) to respond to the claim by Steve Bruce, stating, “If you know, you know.”

Asamoah Gyan signed a four-year contract with Sunderland in the summer of 2010. However, less than a year later, he moved on loan to Al-Ain in the United Arab Emirates.

This loan move eventually became a permanent transfer, with Gyan officially joining the UAE club.

While initial reports suggested that Gyan pushed for an exit from Sunderland, he later clarified that he was, in fact, compelled to leave the club.

“When the offer came, it was just a loan deal, and they felt they needed that money so they made me go, and in the contract, it was stated that when the player decides to stay after the loan deal, they will offer a four-year permanent deal,” he told Pure FM in Kumasi.

“Sunderland thought I would go and come back because they needed the money at that time. However, when I went there, I was top scorer and my football improved.

So I assessed myself, something that would make me happy, and I fell in love with the place, so I decided to sign the extension.

“But when the deal actually came, I didn’t want to leave because I was the marksman and Darren Bent had left for Aston Villa, and I was the top man, scoring goals, and the fans loved me.

So when you look at all these things and let me leave and I also look at my personal terms and I feel it was good, and the club wanted me out, why not?

“They didn’t care about the fans, and if they turned a blind eye to all that I did and wanted to let me leave, why not.”
